# Handback, stage C4: the model against the field

Written at C4a, 2026-10-14 (UTC), at the close of stage C4.
- **The comparison:** `field-C4.md`, in three lists.
- **The successor files** stage C5 reads first, through `manifest-C4.txt`: `model-C4.md` and `structure-C4.md`, each written whole. `concept-C3.md` has no successor.
- **The record of each step:** `notes-C4.md` and the diary.
- **The field's own files:** `out/field/model.md` and `out/field/check.md`. They are byte-identical copies of the handler's files.

**What the counts here license.** The field analyst worked from r/place, the subreddit where the rooms met, and marked each claim firm or provisional. A firm claim is a public statement or exchange. A provisional claim is that analyst's explanation or a limit of the evidence. The field's selected episodes do not retest my room counts. My counts are of coded turns in 705 rooms. Neither source sees what members did off the record.

## The claim

The field confirmed the model's account of authority and changed none of its counts.
- **Members make agreements between rooms that they cannot make every placer keep.** Both sources show this. In the square, a member accepts a buffer with "I don't speak for all rainbownians, but I agree to these terms" (`62mg1j`). In flyers, a member says that one user's agreement "doesn't mean every lurker/person active on the sub agrees" [flyers/c0166, h53.41].
- **Decided order is rare (F-006).** The field shows members seeking leaders, not leaders deciding.
- **The field adds two mechanisms that live between rooms.** Members dispute who may commit their room to an agreement. After placement ends, members contest which version of the canvas and of the event is kept. Both entered the model as tentative entries for stage D to put to every room.
- **The field corrected three of my sentences:**
  - a sentence in my model, that organizing for the canvas ended at hour 73;
  - two sentences in my declarations, that a template is the strongest coordination and that every room existed before the canvas.

**The room that best supports the model:** day9. It builds, loses its border at hour 48, moves within two hours and finishes the new work at hour 53. The field has no episode from day9 and does not test it.

**The room that most threatens it:** thebluecorner, a colour faction whose faith names its rivals and picks its guests. The field's records show members of large groups asking who may speak for them. They do not show the faith of a colour faction. The threat stands where stage C3 left it.

## The counts of the comparison

The next table gives the size of each list in `field-C4.md`.

| list | items | what entered the model |
|---|---|---|
| where the two agree | 5 shared mechanisms, and one agreement on the clock | nothing new; F-006 and F-004 now have a second source |
| what only the field sees | 4 items: 2 entered, 2 not entered | P21 and P22 (elements), A21 (arrow), each tentative and from the field |
| where they disagree | 6 items: 2 substantive, 1 of setting, 1 of subject, 1 not a disagreement about a count, 1 a limit of the evidence | 2 declarations amended; 1 model sentence bounded; 2 disagreements printed beside the model |

**The five shared mechanisms:**
1. Members make agreements between rooms that they cannot make every placer keep.
2. A specified design makes the work possible to act on, and inside a thread a posted template settles a design under argument.
3. A request for space, answered with terms, changes one room's plan. My structure holds this; my model does not use it.
4. Members record the work so that it outlasts the canvas.
5. Placement ends at hour 73, and members tell those who propose to place after it that the canvas is closed.

## The sharpest disagreement, and the source I trust

**What a template can do.** My declaration of Standardization of output said that a template "replaces argument with reference" and is "the room's strongest coordination at scale". The field holds a design offered at hour 2.04 as easy to follow. By its contributor's later account, "we failed to coordinate enough to actually follow the picture." (`6384jy`). My rooms show the same:
- "Stop adding periods, the template is wrong." [2007scape/c0230, h17.72];
- "sorry for the vandalizing on the original one, just a lack of coordination!" [AvoArmy/c0228, h56.19].

I trust the field and my rooms together, against my own declaration. No test of mine ever ranked the template against other ways of coordinating. The prose is amended: a template gives an argument something to point to, it does not make placers follow it, and it can be wrong. A11, the local transition from an argued design to a posted template, is unchanged. The field's check agrees that it holds inside threads.

**The other disagreements.**
- **What ended at hour 73: a difference of subject.** I trust the field, and my rooms confirm it.
- **Whether every room existed before the canvas: substantive, and my own error.** I trust the field and my own count of 78 rooms.
- **Where authority is questioned: a difference of setting.** I trust both on different things: the field sees authority sought, and my rooms count authority placed.
- **One early buffer in the square against the order of A04.** I trust the rooms' count across 401 rooms on the order.
- **Dating by the hour of a post: a limit.** I trust the field.

## Findings bounded or changed by the field

None. No finding was withdrawn, bounded or rewritten.
- **F-006 and C01** stand, with the field's authority questions printed beside them.
- **F-004** stands, with a second source.
- **F-016's line for Standardization of output** already said that no one can make a placer follow the template.

## Files with a stage C4 successor

- `model-C3.md`, and the earlier model files it superseded: superseded by `model-C4.md`.
- `structure-C3.md`, and the earlier structure files it superseded: superseded by `structure-C4.md`.
- `concept-C3.md`: no successor.

## What I am sure of, what I am not, and why

**Sure.**
- The five agreements. Each is shown by one of my rooms and one field thread, and two analysts who could not see each other's work found it.
- The two amended sentences were wrong as written. The field and my own rooms or counts contradict each one.
- None of the three claims I named before opening the field was overturned.

**Not sure.**
- **The entries' basis.** The tentative entries rest on explanations the field marks provisional.
- **P22's room side** was found by a keyword search after hour 73, not by any theme.
- **A21's direction,** from an agreement to a dispute over who may commit the room, comes from one field episode.
- **The field's silence on the rest of my structure is not agreement.** It read `structure-C3.md` only in part and by reconstruction.
- **The validator's reading** rests on the handler's correction of the field's place (QC4-001). A renamed link waits for the handler (QC4-002).

## For the stages after

- **Stage C5** reads `model-C4.md` and `structure-C4.md` through the manifest, and writes in descriptive, academic English, as J ruled. Three points for it:
  - the story still carries the head-count claim stage C3 dropped, and the field trusts the drop;
  - the closure sentence is bounded, and the story should say what went on after hour 73;
  - a request for space answered with terms (yielding and granting) is in both sources and not in my model.
- **Stage D** sends P21, P22 and A21 to every room, marked tentative and with no word of their source.
- **Set aside here, carried from the C3c interview fork:**
  - the correction to the C3a ruling on Felin and Zenger, where the setting differs, not the subject;
  - the arrow from the move back to the goal, which would close the first loop;
  - Visibility returns;
  - the recalled source for Stigmergy.
