Chronology
When the canvas opened, r/czech's openings still mixed ordinary
visitor questions and entertainment with no event-wide thread. The event
first becomes visible at d0 03-31 20:26 in 62nvbl: “For the
glory of our country. Fight for our flag against the infidels.
/r/place.” Three minutes later, dfnzcvf explains the game
and asks that “we all took care of it against griefers.” The first
episode, bounded by 62nvbl and dfq2s7m, grows
from joining and overnight repair into borders, wedge geometry, beer,
words and choices about neighboring work. Its coordination is loose
rather than absent: dfoysvh specifies that “the slope
should be 2/3” and later thanks people when it looks better, while other
passages say helpers are using incompatible plans.
At d1 04-02 08:43, the episode bounded by 62yo19 and
dfqn62t concentrates planning in one large flag-plan
thread. Participants choose between easy and correct wedges, finite
borders and expansion, and invading or sparing neighbors. These are
contemporaneous differences, not evidence that the community changed its
mind. One edited turn, dfq1ppr, reverses its own
proposal—“Edit: do not invade. The guys are cool.”—but that supports a
change by that speaker only. Plans also become recognizable Czech
additions: beer, CZECH, hearts, a motto and a Prague
image.
From 62z23h through dfrogj6, expansion
repeatedly brings Czech participants into exchange with smaller pictures
and other flags. The Bratislava–Brno motorway becomes D2 and the
Czechoslovak highway; Mindcrack, a mushroom/gameboy project, Armenia,
Texas, the Netherlands, Slovakia and Norway are variously treated as
obstacles, allies or parties to bargains. Participants sometimes stop or
redirect expansion after replies and checks. The record also shows
automated defense: dfr4ype says “many people here just
running selfrepairing bots over night” and reports three on the Czech
flag. This is a participant's account of human-operated automation, not
machine-generated text treated as conduct.
A Czech–Dutch friendship-art sequence crosses the slice boundary.
63249i proposes “Pat & Mat / Buurman & Buurman — to
celebrate the Czech-Dutch friendship”; 11 hours 55 minutes 20 seconds
later, 635iwj posts “To celebrate our friendship in
r/place!” and the following comments work on the design through
dfrpn72. [crosses 01|02] The timing comes from the forest
index. Because the later post does not say that the earlier post caused
it, this is a supported continuation in subject and practice, not a
causal claim.
At d2 04-03 12:50, moderator 636ju3 opens a megathread
“To keep this sub civil and organised.” The episode bounded by
636ju3 and dfrxt9j centralizes late proposals:
three standalone design threads receive the same moderator direction
that r/place submissions “are only allowed here,” first at
dfruzwd 2 hours 40 minutes 45 seconds after the megathread
opened, and later at dfrxsxq and dfrxt9j.
Inside the megathread, participants repair D2, discuss hearts and Czech
symbols, and carry Dutch ideas back into the room.
Placement had ended by the episode bounded by 638c1g and
639a46. At d3 04-03 17:38, 638c1g says
“/r/place has ended, good job everyone!” Posts and comments then
exchange ending pictures, thanks, neighborly affection and a Dutch
anthem. The record does not establish unanimous understanding:
dfs9dn0 still says, “I still don't know what that was all
about.”
The last event-related episode, bounded by 63bg75 and
dftj5z3, tries to continue elsewhere. 63bg75
asks who wants to make a Czech flag on a “Place knockoff” and edits in a
claim that Place 2.0 is the “official replacement.” Replies call it the
fourth copy (dft27fr) and say repetition is “pointless”
(dft7dpn), while the original poster later reports, “I've
already managed to paint whole flag there” (dftj5z3). This
is one participant's reported continuation; the record does not show the
room adopting the replacement. Ordinary news, humor and
film-identification posts continue after it.
Relations — what set off what
Several relations have textual support stronger than reply adjacency.
Mindcrack's dfq317t asks, “Please don't take us over” and
requests expansion to the left. Seven minutes 16 seconds later, direct
reply dfq35ef says, “I think we should let the G alone.”
Here the later turn answers the earlier request; it is not inferred
merely from order.
The Slovak appeal in dfq7xq2 says, “Help us brothers.
You are our only hope!” Direct reply dfq8jlx answers that
D2 is finished and “our troops will be there shortly.” This supports a
request-and-answer relation. It does not establish whether the promised
help succeeded.
In the neighboring-art dispute, dfq6pqx says a
seven-minute timelapse check convinced the speaker that the complaint
might be right, followed by “I won't encroach on your stuff anymore. My
apologies.” That is the participant's own explanation for stopping. It
supports the link for this speaker; it does not prove that the check
changed everyone else's placements.
The Dutch attack warning and reversal provide the clearest supported
development. dfqlpvd says, “The Dutch are likely planning
to attack us. We need reinforcements!” Twenty-six minutes later,
dfqmvec edits its proposed diversionary attack to: “they're
not attacking, I'll stop my ferocious counterattacks.” At 51 minutes 27
seconds after the warning, direct reply dfqo0j5 says,
“We've put it to a vote. We will coexist peacefully with you.” The edit
explicitly links new information to that speaker stopping; the
contrasting claims by other speakers do not, by themselves, show that
the community collectively changed its mind.
Moderation also produces direct responses: the rule in
636ju3 is subsequently named by dfruzwd,
dfrxsxq and dfrxt9j when each standalone
proposal is redirected. After the end, Dutch thanks in
dfs4sri—“thank you guys for being good neighbours even
though we were kinda dickish”—receives the direct answer “I am very
happy with how everything turned out” in dfs5b22 9 minutes
51 seconds later.
One tempting cross-slice link is deliberately weaker. The Pat &
Mat proposal 63249i is followed 11 hours 55 minutes 20
seconds later by friendship-design work in 635iwj, but
neither cited title states that the first caused the second. It is
therefore reported as a sequence that crosses 01|02, not as a causal
relation. [crosses 01|02]
Posts against comments
Posts make categorical calls; comments usually expose the conditions
and disagreement underneath. The post 631d37 says, “Let is
be us for once who invades! Texas shall fall.” Its comments say “Please
don't” because a Texan has defended both flags (dfqjghw)
and that participants had “already agreed to a truce”
(dfqjh70). The descriptive contrast is that the post calls
for invasion while the comment layer invokes reciprocity and a prior
agreement; it does not show a settled community-wide reversal.
The sharpest contradiction is 6365ry. Its post offers
help because “Your flag is blocking our flag.” Comment
dfrlo1c calls the Dutch flag “fucking gigantic” and the
proposal “greedy,” while dfrm5uh separates the Netherlands
from a “rogue asshole.” Thus the post presents relocation as help; the
comments present the same proposal as dispossession by one actor and
deny that it represents the allied group.
Some practices live mainly in comments: exact wedge slopes, refresh
instructions, which work may move, whether a truce holds, and how to
distinguish organized allies from rogues. Short posts more often propose
visible objects or issue alarms. The megathread differs because its post
states the moderator's rule and its rationale, while comment replies
enforce it on later submissions. After the ending post's “good job”
(638c1g), most comments celebrate or correct the image, but
dfs9dn0 remains confused; that contrast limits claims of
shared understanding, not the observable celebration.
Counter-reading
My one-sentence reading is: r/czech turned a growing Czech flag into loosely coordinated repair, recognizable pictures and reciprocal neighbor work, using pacts and off-subreddit contact to manage recurring conflict before centralizing late proposals and celebrating the result.
If that reading were wrong, the record would instead contain Czech participants broadly rejecting the Dutch alliance, naming Dutch plans as a takeover, or refusing shared projects rather than distinguishing would-be annexers and rogues from organized allies.
Before searching I recorded that competing account, then searched the
complete record for the case's own contrary vocabulary:
no truce, gigantic, greedy, forms
of annex, rogue elements or
rogue asshole, and Dutch attack. The search
returned 13 items, and all 13 were opened with the reading tool. The
strongest contrary item is dfrlo1c: “Your flag is fucking
gigantic ... Stop being so greedy.” dfrl6lk also says it
“seems like there is no truce” and fears the Czech flag will be
gone.
Those items change the account by making the Dutch relationship
visibly contested and asymmetrical: cooperation never erased fear of
being crowded out. They do not replace the account with wholesale
rejection. In the same search return, dfrkf94 says
“Dutchies are trying to protect your flag against rogue elements”;
dfqo8j5 says some people want annexation while “everyone
else” will try to prevent it; and dfqocjt similarly says
most will prevent an attack. Three previously uncoded returned passages
became late codes c0293, c0294 and
c0295, attached to the existing invasion and pact themes.
No searched thread changed disposition.
Saturation
Record saturation is strong for the supplied archive but limited for the historical event. The two fleet coders read every one of their whole-thread slices and disposed all 85 threads; the lead then read all pooled codes, both slice cases, the forest, and every counter-search hit. No single reader held the whole raw week, so cross-slice relations are weaker than a one-reader account and are marked where used. Fifty-two deleted or removed items, including 21 posts with missing bodies, can hide rationales for proposals and diplomacy. One in-window reply lacks its parent.
Off-subreddit coordination is both conduct and an evidence boundary. Czech and Dutch Discords carried planning and diplomacy; Reddit receives plans, warnings and reported vote results, but not the discussions that produced them. Place 2.0 similarly returns a reported painted flag without showing its coordination.
Practice saturation was late rather than early. Fourteen themes were already founded in batch 01 and batch 02 extended them, including flag design, pacts, bot use, neighboring-space negotiation and celebration. Batch 02 introduced one genuinely new practice—marking the end and looking back—because placement ended within that slice. No later slice exists to test whether post-event practice would repeat. The Place 2.0 attempt remains a thin continuation rather than evidence of a settled new collective project.
Selection
The lead read the briefing and all 85 opening entries before the gate, using them only to locate the week's shape. Branch B then assigned whole threads in corpus order: batch 01 covered 62 threads and batch 02 covered 23. Each coder opened every event-touching long thread in full and recorded every disposition. Threads were kept for r/place conduct, responses and aftermath, recruited ordinary practices, or attempts to continue the event; ordinary travel, law, food, entertainment and the separate Mapy.cz April Fools map were excluded. Openings were orientation rather than evidence, and the lead did not read raw threads until step 5's permitted item reads.
Other communities named
The named places form working relationships rather than a mere list.
dfq317t brings r/Mindcrack into a negotiation over
expansion; Russia is both a proposed target and a source of reciprocal
non-encroachment; Armenia and Texas ask for or provide defense; and
r/Slovakia is treated as a brother and ally through D2, the Czechoslovak
highway and defense appeals such as dfq7xq2. r/gameboy
begins as neighboring work that some want moved or erased and becomes
work Czech participants promise to build or defend.
The Netherlands is the sustained counterpart: r/cirkeltrek, r/thenetherlands and Dutch Discord participants appear as diplomats, planners, potential annexers and defenders. The record supports variation inside that relation rather than treating every Dutch speaker as one actor. Other named subreddits—r/europe, r/PuertoRico, r/Turkey, r/shawnhate, r/me_irl, r/ainbowroad, r/OutOfTheLoop, r/ShawnHate, r/stevenuniverse and r/thebutton—appear as helpers, attackers, damaged work, explanatory links or comparisons, as recorded in the pointer file.
Coordination visibly leaves Reddit for a Czechoslovak Place Discord
and Dutch Place Discords, while plans and diplomatic reports return.
r/placecz is created for related coordination but the corpus does not
show uptake. The final 63bg75 link moves activity to
place.dynastic.co; what returns is one participant's report of a
completed flag, not the unseen process.
Absence
Deleted and removed bodies are concentrated among proposals, warnings and inter-community approaches. Surviving titles show calls for pacts, help, beer, mottos, a Discord and border hearts, while replies sometimes show reactions; neither licenses reconstruction of the missing wording. In particular, the repeated “Kolache Alliance” titles and the removed r/MenOnKazoo and Slovakia/Norway openings preserve that an approach occurred but not its full request or result.
Automatic previews and link conversions from bot accounts were
treated as platform setting. The human act of running self-repairing
placement bots, explicitly described in dfr4ype, was
retained as conduct. The supplied archive is complete as served, but its
header is not independent proof of historical collection completeness,
and off-platform discussions remain visible only through what
participants brought back.
