Chronology

The room was still carrying its ordinary mixture of employment, travel, education, and news discussion when the canvas opened. The first visible r/place episode runs from 62nvdi to dfoxfd2. At d0 03-31 20:26, the surviving post title called, “let's destroy the swedes on /r/place!” (62nvdi), and a reply supplied coordinates (dfnzq12). By d0 04-01 00:33, a larger thread located two Norwegian flags and said the bigger one “need[ed]” fixing (62pf3j). The exchange then became practical: “make the white line twice as thick” (dfolzu2), “Upper left corner 1st!” (dfom3hp), and a specification of 12 red, 2 white, 4 blue, 2 white, and 12 red (62s629). Expansion and defence were already contested rather than sequential community positions: one post called for a bigger flag (62pf3j), while another said a larger territory was harder to defend and urged protecting the existing flag from Sweden (62sncg). A Danish speaker then proposed a joint attack on Sweden after things calmed down (dfoxfd2). These are contrasting positions expressed by different speakers, not evidence that the room collectively changed its mind.

The second episode, from dfp78sd to dfqkjvr, mixed artwork, accommodation, and renewed territorial claims across d1 and early d2. Participants asked that an ostehøvel be integrated rather than destroyed (dfp78sd), granted an unidentified visitor permission to treat the flag “as your own” (dfpd8bv), and chose a hanging flag instead of expansion in answer to r/factorio (dfq2fk7). A request to stop attacking r/crusaderkings was answered with “We made a pact. We're helping you guys now” (dfq2ene), followed by thanks (dfq2g68) and “No worries mates” (dfq2jp0). At the same time, other speakers still proposed turning the Danish flag Norwegian (dfoytgc), refused r/Madeon's request because “we will claim the area” (dfpbsa2), and asked why expansion toward Day9 continued while Crusader Kings covered the flag (62zbly). A Swedish participant reported helping all night to keep the heart between the flags (dfqd5k6), while the original poster later said it was mostly r/norge “fighting the good fight” (dfqkjvr).

The third and largest episode, from 632j25 to dfrx3ig, began at d2 04-02 21:53 and ran to d3 04-03 16:11, shortly before placement stopped. Outsiders repeatedly arrived with proposals or complaints: Texas proposed hearts among four flags (632j25), Steven Universe said Norway was invading its remaining space (632xaq), Texas asked Norway to leave its flag unchanged (634mc0), chess requested room for a piece (634p2y), Slovakia asked Norway to stop eating its flag (636ank), Yogscast brought a request (636yhk), and FFXIV asked permission to claim a space (637igs).

The recurrent response was routing. Participants said r/norge was “the main Norwegian sub” coordinating the flag (dfr076f), that “all the r/place action” was there (dfriz24), and that r/Norge was “the sub behind the flag” while r/Norway was the tourist/English-speaking sub (dfrn6db). Others directed diplomacy to Discord (dfrohx2; dfroeo9). Routing did not mean uniform accommodation. Texas was told “Your flag has to go” to make space for Norwegian art (dfrgd2p); FFXIV was refused because Norway had artwork plans (dfrvohp), and its requester then said it would look elsewhere (dfrx3ig). Slovakia, by contrast, received a report that a Discord poll supported peace (dfrogwe).

After placement ended, the final coded episode runs from 638exb to dfsbipw. At d3 04-03 17:50, Dutch participants wrote that they were honoured to have been Norway's ally (638exb). A reply celebrated that they had “stayed friends untill the game ended” (dfs6i7s), and another identified the missing context as r/place (dfsbipw). After that, the visible room returned to its ordinary subjects: “2017 snow conditions” (638vj1), “Travelling advice appreciated!” (639baz), and a “tax table query” (63evq9).

Relations — what set off what

The clearest relations are direct textual answers, not mere reply adjacency.

In the early repair exchange, “Everyone join in and make the line thicker” (dfom165) is answered 2.4 minutes later by “We gotta coordinate” and “Upper left corner 1st!” (dfom3hp). The later turn explicitly takes up the requested repair and supplies a starting point. This supports a call-and-coordination relation; it does not establish that the first comment caused the later one.

r/Madeon's request asked whether Norway could go around its logo (dfp8b66). The reply 1.4 hours later said, “Sorry, you have to find another place for your logo, we will claim the area” (dfpbsa2). The words make this a refusal of the request.

The r/factorio post said, “Stop attacking /r/factorio please” (62yuxs). Eighteen and a half minutes later, the reply stated, “We decided on a hanging flag instead of expansion. You guys should be good” (dfq2fk7). This supports an observed answer in which a participant presents a changed plan as reassurance. The corpus does not show who “we” includes or the decision process, so it does not support a community-wide causal claim.

The r/crusaderkings post made the same kind of request (62yvzd). Six point eight minutes later, “We made a pact. We're helping you guys now” (dfq2ene) directly answered it; the following thanks (dfq2g68) and “No worries” (dfq2jp0) complete the exchange. A duplicate posted turn repeats the pact (dfq2enk). This supports the existence of a publicly affirmed pact in this exchange, not proof that every builder followed it.

The Steven Universe ambassador said Norway was invading its remaining space (632xaq). A response 1.7 hours after the post did not settle the border; it explained that r/norge coordinated the flag and supplied a thread there (dfr076f). The same thread contains a participant's own explanation that “Some kids took over the discord channel” and wanted expansion for its own sake (dfrdpn5). That is a participant's attribution of responsibility. The supplied record does not independently establish the actors, takeover, or causal effect.

Slovakia's post asked Norway to stop eating its flag (636ank). A later top-level comment reported that “A poll on our discord server resulted in a majority in support of peace between our nations” (dfrogwe). The shared object—peace between the named nations—supports treating the report as an answer to the appeal. It remains a report about an unseen poll, not direct evidence of the poll or compliance on the canvas.

FFXIV asked permission to stake a claim (dfrv4s0). Ten and a half minutes after that comment, a reply said Norway had artwork plans of its own (dfrvohp); at 38.8 minutes after the opening post, the requester thanked everyone and said it would look elsewhere (dfrx3ig). The words support request, refusal, and acceptance in sequence. Elsewhere, posts and replies merely follow one another; where no later passage names or answers an earlier practice, this account treats the order as sequence only.

Posts against comments

The post layer is dominated by summons, proposals, and incoming appeals. The comment layer more often supplies coordinates, decisions, refusals, explanations, and routes to another venue.

Several layers align. The post asking r/crusaderkings to be spared (62yvzd) is followed by comments affirming a pact and help (dfq2ene; dfq2enk). The FFXIV post asks for space (637igs), and the comments answer the request, refuse it, and record the requester's acceptance (dfrvohp; dfrx3ig).

The explicit contradictions are:

A claim found mainly in comments is that r/Norway was the wrong operational venue: r/norge coordinated the flag (dfr076f), the action happened there (dfriz24), and r/Norway was described as the tourist/English-speaking sub (dfrn6db). A claim found mainly in post titles is the flood of outsiders' appeals, many with removed bodies; their comments preserve where respondents sent them.

Counter-reading

My reading is that r/Norway served mainly as an overflow desk where outsiders brought canvas disputes and were repeatedly sent to r/norge or Discord, while a smaller set of participants also rallied repairs, expansion, art, pacts, and defence inside this venue.

If that reading were wrong, the corpus should instead contain participants repeatedly claiming decisions and coordinated attacks in r/Norway, or identifying r/Norway—rather than r/norge or Discord—as the group behind the flag.

The strongest contrary item is dfom3hp: “We gotta coordinate so people understand where we are going, and join in. Upper left corner 1st!” It occurs in 62pf3j, an early thread that genuinely coordinates flag repair here. The broad contrary search over the complete supplied record returned 33 items. After every returned item was opened, the consequential hits also included “We decided on a hanging flag instead of expansion” (dfq2fk7), “we will claim the area” (dfpbsa2), “We need space for Norwegian art” (dfrgd2p), and an attempted attack on Texas “on your behalf” that found Norway too few (dfqh28a). The search therefore rules out a pure “nothing was organised here” account. It added the last of those as a late code and also recovered the separately posted repetition of the Crusader Kings pact (dfq2enk).

A narrower full-record search for r/Norway near words such as coordinate, behind, decide, or organise produced one textual hit, but reading it showed the opposite claim: r/norge was coordinating the flag and r/Norway was “not that much used” (dfr076f). The parallel search for r/norge near coordinate, behind, or action returned three items; after reading them, all three located coordination or action in r/norge (dfr076f; dfriz24; dfrn6db). Thus the revised reading is that real but limited live coordination occurred here, especially early, while the later diplomatic flood was mostly redirected. The conclusion survives with that qualification.

The targeted absence cannot prove that nobody elsewhere treated r/Norway as central. Eighty-three supplied items have deleted or removed text, off-platform talk is only glimpsed through reports and links, and the search can test only the supplied record.

Saturation

The record is sufficient to show the venue's recurring practices: rallying flag work, taking or refusing space, asking for restraint, negotiating pacts, redirecting business, and policing the tourist/English-sub boundary. Redirecting repeats from “Better asked at /r/norge” (dfp9x9h) through the late Shawn appeal (dfrs5oq). The counter-reading added two passages to existing themes and required no new theme, so later checking repeated the established practice structure rather than opening a new one.

The record is not whole as an account of Norwegian canvas organising. Discord carried expansion talk, a poll, and diplomacy according to participants (dfrdpn5; dfrogwe; dfrohx2), but the deliberation itself is unseen. Participants repeatedly say r/norge was the coordinating venue (dfr076f; dfriz24; dfrn6db), which this case can identify but not reconstruct. Removed bodies are especially consequential in incoming diplomatic posts, and the archive cannot show what those bodies originally asked beyond surviving titles and replies.

Selection

I read brief.md and the complete openings.md before triage, as required for a branch-A lead. The openings supplied orientation to the week but were not coded and do not support a relation. I then followed all 97 threads in corpus order through the instrument's windows, opened every thread whose window touched r/place, and retained 35 as coded. Ordinary travel, employment, education, tax, news, and entertainment threads were disposed as out of scope; every read out-of-scope thread with at least ten in-window items carries the instrument-returned exclusion citation.

The selection includes conduct around the canvas, incoming diplomacy, post-event recollection, and r/Norway's own handling of misplaced r/place talk. It does not treat a bare ambiguous title as event evidence when the body and replies do not establish the connection.

Other communities named

r/norge is the central named neighbour in this case, not as an ally or enemy but as the Norwegian venue participants say coordinated the flag (dfr076f). r/factorio and r/crusaderkings appear in requests to stop attacks; the former receives reassurance about ending expansion (dfq2fk7), while the latter receives an affirmed pact (dfq2ene). r/Madeon asks Norway to go around its logo and is refused (dfp8b66; dfpbsa2). r/texas and r/stevenuniverse make repeated appeals against invasion (6340w3; 632xaq). r/chess and r/ffxiv ask for space (634p2y; 637igs), and r/ffxiv accepts a refusal (dfrx3ig). r/nordvei is named as a venue for strategy talk (dfrkdhy). Discord is the one off-platform venue participants describe as carrying organising and diplomacy; what returns to r/Norway are reports, links, and policy claims rather than the deliberation itself.

Absence

The header records 83 deleted or removed items, including 43 posts. This matters because many diplomatic posts survive only as titles: “Stop attacking /r/crusaderkings please” (62yvzd), “Please, stop eating our flag” (636ank), and “Please, Stop ruining our flag” (636ch1). Their surviving replies still show pacts, redirection, and reported policy, but the missing bodies prevent fuller reconstruction of terms, images, and reasons.

The account does not infer deleted words, unseen images, canvas outcomes, or Discord deliberations. It treats surviving titles as published text, attributes image descriptions to the commenters who supplied them, and leaves claims about off-platform decisions as participant reports.
